Their use is vital to the success of a web site. These words must sum up the whole essence of your web site, and must be highly competitive. The reason keywords are so important to the success or failure of your web site is because of the way spiders perform the assessment and ranking of web pages and store limited information about them. So, the first consideration will be to find the sort of words or phrases users are likely to enter into search engines to find your type of web site.

Keywords should not be too vague, as large subject areas are normally already catered for by larger sites of long standing, and will be hard to compete with in the initial stage. Therefore, at least primarily, keywords should be as specific as possible, whilst being directly related to the subject matter of the web site concerned.

Most surfers don't use single words when performing a search, so it is better to use more than one word to form our "keywords." So, if you were preparing keywords for a site about pets, instead of using words like "dog" or "bird," a better choice would be "German Shepherd Dogs" or "Amazon Parrots," as surfers tend to look for exact items or services.

Another consideration is the geographical area of the web content. You can easily take full advantage of this to (a) show the spiders, both humans and robots, that perform searches for the search engines that your site is specific, and (b) to acquire visitors more likely to be interested in what your web site has to offer. An example of this would be if you were creating keywords for a site about your local chess club in Oxford, you could use keywords like "Oxford Chess Clubs," "Chess Clubs in Oxford" or "Oxford Board Games."

Other considerations for the creation of good keywords would be lower/upper-case letters and mis-spellings. Many web sites enjoy a heavy volume of traffic thanks to misspelled words. If you know a common mis-spelling for one of your keywords, this could be very favourable for you to include. You might even be able to locate a site that specialises in these misspellings!

To sum up, keywords preferably contain more than one word, are specific, preferably with geograhical location, and can include various typecase-settings and even misspelt words.
