"Spiders" Tips
Spider Evolution !
Since the first really popular net search engine, Archie, which
appeared in 1990 to assist people to locate files online, every day search
engine webmasters have been using advancing technologies to make their spiders
more efficient. This means that trying to fool them, while working in the
short term, will eventually lead to your website paying heavily in its search
results ranking, or in some instances
being banned altogether from future submissionto search
engines. As a lot of search engine spiders use a common formula for detecting
deceptions, this means that being penalised or banned by one search engine
inevitably leads to being penalised or banned by others! For example, webmasters
have used the strategy of dupicating keywords on
the website's main page, and then hiding the text by using the same colour
for the text as the background. This tactic was commonplace at one time, but
search engine designers soon realised what was happening, and tricks such
as this no longer work (so don't try it, or you know what the result will
be).
Spiders don't like Spam !
The
slightest hint that a webmaster is trying to "spam" a search engine
will lead to possible banning of that site from future submissions. Whilst
a few search engines allow more than one
web-page to be submitted, the large majority only require the home page, as
their spiders are programmed to follow the links from that page. Similarly,
a common mistake made by anxious webmasters is to submit their websites too
often. This can cause a similar disasterous effect. Over-submission in a fruitless
attempt to gain the search engines attention is asking to get banned! As a
general rule, one submission per month to the search engines is quite sufficient
promotion, as the spiders of the search engines
require time between submissions to examine all the other websites listed.

Search Engines have different criteria
Whilst
we consider the application of spiders, it must be kept in mind that some
search engines, including the most noted, use a member of staff to personally

attempt to increase traffic) will also be detected by people employed to review
sites prior to listing. This means that if you try tricks that might deceive

doorway pages will also be immediately spotted! It is far better to submit
a well organised and constructed home page with all the required elements
to get the desired results.
Frames
Whilst
the use of frames in a website can be very appealing to the eye, unfortunately
spiders do not view a web page as we do. It
seems that spiders have difficulty following links from frames, and very often
this leads to very low rankings within the search engine listings. Therefore,
in the design planning stage, it is worth bearing in mind that frames are
not "spider-friendly" and if possible their use should be avoided.
